Our blog entry today celebrates the arrival of autumn. With its wonderful colours and flavours, autumn is one of the most loved seasons. September marks the beginning of a new school year, a new and exciting prospect for children( and parents) worldwide. The concept of autumn in European languages is connected with the harvesting of crops; in many cultures autumn, like the other seasons, has been marked by rites and festivals revolving around the season’s importance in food production. Let’s celebrate autumn by enriching our vocabulary with some autumn essentials, from A to Z.
- A- autumn
- B- bountiful adj. A bountiful supply or amount of something pleasant is a large one.
Example: a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables.
- C- crop ( noun) the plants or fruits that are collected at harvest time are referred to as a crop.
Example:
Each year it produces a fine crop of fruit.
- D- delicacy(noun) is a rare or expensive food that is considered especially nice to eat.
Example: We were served course after course of mouthwatering local delicacies.
- E- equinox (noun) either of the two occasions, six months apart, when day and night are of equal length.
Example: the autumnal equinox
- F- fall (noun) autumn in AmE
- G- gourd(noun) a type of fruit with a hard thick skin. Some gourds can be cooked and eaten.
- H- hayride(noun) a pleasure ride or outing, usually at night, by a group in an open wagon or truck partly filled with hay
Example: Our church sponsors hayrides a couple of times each year for our congregation.
- I- Indian summer(noun) a period of mild, warm, hazy weather following the first frosts of late autumn.
Example: The Farmer’s Almanac had predicted an Indian summer for the Great Lakes region.
- J- jacket (noun)
- K-K-12 kindergarten through twelfth: used for talking about the 13 years of school before your university education
Example: The school needed to hire a bunch of K-12 teachers.
- L-leaf (noun, pl.leaves)
- M- marmalade (noun) a food made from oranges, plums, lemons, or grapefruit that is similar to jam. It is eaten on bread or toast at breakfast.
- N- November
- O- orange
- P- pinecone (noun) one of the brown oval seed cases produced by a pine tree.
- Q- quilt( noun) a thin cover filled with feathers or some other warm, soft material, which you put over your blankets when you are in bed.
- R-reap (verb) to reap crops means to cut them down and gather them.
Example:
The painting depicted a group of peasants reaping a harvest of fruits and vegetables.
- S- September
- T- Thanksgiving (noun) in the US, the fourth Thursday in November, and in Canada, the second Monday in October, when families have a special meal, traditionally to celebrate all the things that they are grateful for
Example:
Will you be seeing your family on Thanksgiving?
- U-umbrella
- V- vineyard(noun) a plantation of grapevines, esp where wine grapes are produced.
Example:
There are vineyards and cherry orchards on the hillsides and the plains are planted with gorgeous fruit.
- W- wind
- Y- yam (noun) a root vegetable which is like a sweet potato, and grows in tropical regions.
- Z- zeal(noun) great enthusiasm, especially in connection with work, religion, or politics.
